Welcome -

Over the last 20 years I have worked with children, adolescents and adults to help them sort through negative past experiences and present day confusions and fears.

Therapeutic approach -

I believe each individual has within him or herself the resources for thinking through situations, resolving problems, and moving into new and positive situations. Often, however, it can be difficult to access these resources. All too often, early negative experiences (assault, neglect, witnessing violence, loss, emotional abuse) and recent traumatizing experiences become stuck inside. The inaccurate negative beliefs about the self and the world taken in from these experiences continue to dominate the way an individual feels and thinks.

These beliefs can 'cripple' a child or an adult as s/he tries to move forward. However much one tries to tell the beliefs to be quiet or go away, they persist. As a therapist, I work with children and adults to help them access their own resources and to process negative experiences (they are experiences we wish had not happened but they are not the individual). I ask questions, notice and reflect back the individual's distress, clarify the reality of situations (both past and present), and provide support as we process negative events and the trauma-related beliefs. We may talk (play for young children), use EMDR, focus on body reactions, or use imaging..

We will take time to recognize what the early experiences were like for you, given the age you were then, and what you need now to help you move on from those experiences. We will look at present situations and how you wish to handle them in order to feel good about yourself. As we work, I may challenge you to look at something in a different way or to try another way of thinking but in all of this I shall listen carefully and respectfully to each feeling and thought you express.
